a week in paradise: DAY 1

8/31/08

We got out of bed, ate breakfast, and sunblocked up. As we walked out to our car, a local in the parking lot asked us if we were on our honeymoon. I wanted to throw my arms around him! Yes, I know that people get married at a later age these days, but it was still nice to be asked that. We told him we were celebrating our 11th anniversary and that we have 4 kids. He said, "you guys hit it early, huh." It was a nice way to start the day...
We headed to Kealia Beach. The water looked pretty rough so we saw some lava rocks at one end of the shore and went to explore them. We saw all sorts of sea life in the little pools between and on top of the rocks: sea cucumbers, crabs, hermit crabs, fish, and other things that I don't know what their names are. As we were walking on the rocks, Devon hissed, "Tisha, there is a seal right there!" Wow, that was amazing. It was asleep on some rocks and we were on our way to stepping on him. He blended in with the rocks pretty darn good. We took some pics and video and he was so dang cute. He reminded us of Abe: lazy, fat, cute, cuddly, tired. So we named him Abe, of course! We saw on a sign a few days later that if you see a seal (they are monk seals) you are supposed to call a number and they come out and put barriers around it so that no one can get near it. They are endangered and rare. They estimate that there are between 16 - 24 only on Kaua'i. Wow, we new it was amazing to see him, but not that amazing!
Then we headed to Hanalei Bay. We swam in the warm, calm water and floated a lot on our backs. It is so easy to float in that water. After swimming for a couple hours, we went to a place called Bubba's Burgers ("we relish your buns") for lunch. We even ordered some "frings" (fries and onion rings together). I saw a little gecko on a plant and caught it. He was so cute.
We then drove to "the end of the road" or Ke'e Beach. The road literally ends there where the Na Pali coast begins. You know, those really steep mountains that rise straight up from the water. It was beautiful but very crowded at that moment. People were waiting for the sunset. So we turned around and stopped at Ha'ena Beach. This turned out to be our favorite beach of the whole trip. It was beautiful, the waves were good, and we had a blast searching in the shallow water for shells. On the way back towards the hotel we stopped at a scenic overlook. It was a beautiful view of Hanalei Valley, showing a bunch of taro fields.
After it was dark we drove back towards the hotel and stopped in the town of Kapa'a for dinner. Ok, so we ate Coldstone for dinner. Yeah, thats right. And it was delicious! Then we got to the hotel and went straight to the hot tub. It was an awesome beginning to our vacation.
