a week in paradise: DAY 5

9/4/08 OUR 11th ANNIVERSARY

First we made the quick drive (maybe 6 miles) from our hotel to Wailua Falls. It was beautiful. There are so many waterfalls on Kaua'i, it is awesome.

We then stopped at a Longs Drugs to buy some snacks to eat at the beach later. We were going to drive to the end of the road on the other side of the island and didn't know how long we would be there. On the way to Polihale Beach (the beach at the end of the other road) we stopped at our favorite shrimp truck: Savage Shrimp. It did not disappoint. The lady in the truck gave me the recipe for the shrimp that we loved the most and also a packet of coconut powder (which is in the recipe). I was so excited! As we walked around after eating, we ran into a man who was picking mangoes from a tree. We talked to him and he gave us a mango. He pointed out the papaya trees also. That was cool. We ate the mango a couple days later at breakfast and it was delicious.

After driving to the end of the paved road on the west side of the island, we took a dirt road for 5 miles. The road started to get sandy and we didn't want to get stuck in the sand so we got out to climb a little hill to see if we could see the beach. Big mistake. The area was made up of weird thorny shrubs, with dead branches covering the dirt/sand. They just looked like sticks, but we soon felt the thorns through our flip flops. Our feet were bloody and it was so painful to try and make it back to the car, without even getting to the top of the tiny hill. We picked all the thorns out of our flops and kept driving. A little ways down we found a parking lot and the HUGE beach. Devon estimates that the beach (all sand) was 200 yards wide. It was like being at Bear Lake kind of. You walk forever to get to where the water it. Polihale Beach is 7 miles long. There was almost no one there. The sand was really weird. It seemed normal at first, but in certain areas, somewhat close to the water, it would sink way down when we stepped on it. Some places up to our knees!! It was kind of creepy. We swam for quite a while and played out in the waves, but it was a scary place to swim. The current was really strong. There were tons of tiny little shells at this beach.

After having fun at Polihale we drove up Waimea Canyon. We stopped at 4 or 5 lookouts. It was amazing. It is known as the grand canyon of the Pacific. We went as far as we could go on the road to some breathtaking lookouts. At the last 2 there was a thick fog covering up our view. We waited 10-15 minutes and the fog would slowly burn off and we were able to see these absolutely incredible views. At the last lookout we could hear a goat bleating. Of course there were chickens all over, even at the tops of these mountains. Devon spotted the goat way far off on a cliff of a hill (those hunter's eyes came in handy). Then we noticed there were 3 of them, just hanging out on this cliff. That was cool and weird. The locals hunt them. On the way back down the canyon I saw a deer on the side of the road. I had no idea that deer lived on Kaua'i. It was a strange sight as it bounded up the hill when it saw us. We also saw several wild pigs on our trip.
For dinner we picked out some more sushi at Foodland and took it back to our hotel room. Then we relaxed in the hot tub and on the way back to our room I caught a way cute toad. I took him up to our room so that I could take a picture of him. He made the cutest little sounds! I didn't want to let him go, but I returned him to the grass and plants outside. Those toads are all over and I ended up catching 3 more on later days.
